EMECKS | That's My DJ
If you caught Emecks at the last Day Shift, you already know: her set was incredible. She is this week’s feature for That’s my DJ, as we talk about party tricks, Big Mario’s Pizza, how she came into DJing, and the meaning behind her name.
— Interview by Joe Manuel
In your opinion, what is the recipe for a perfect day party?
Music + vibe + good people + refreshments - playa haters = hella fun time. Food/BBQ is a plus!
What is your album for this summer?
Honestly, I haven't had the time to listen to and be able to fully appreciate whole albums lately. But I definitely will be listening to Disney Junior all summer long because of my little mini-me Rowan. He loves the theme songs and I have them all memorized. I actually don't mind them! (Laughs.)
What is the last dream you had?
I don't remember the last dream, but a fun one I remember was me being able to DJ a party where every time I played a track, that artist would show up coincidently and give me props for how I mixed it. Haha. Secretly I want Ciara and Russell Wilson to come to Real Love 90s Jams at Havana on Tuesday – *wink* – I guess DJ life goals, right?
Do you have any party tricks?
I can dance really bad. It's not really a trick, but it’s because I’m an actual good dancer and have danced professionally for years. But for some reason I could really go off beat.
What is your favorite restaurant in Seattle and why?
I love going to Big Mario's. I just have so many memories there with my homies every time we went there while living on the Hill. Now that I don't live there anymore, it's my go to when I'm in the city and hungry. Plus, pizza is the best!
How did you get into DJing?
It started when I was young kid with a passion for music. I was always collecting music, either recording music off of the radio or TV onto a tape, to bootlegging music off of limewire, which took hours on dial-up. I had a friend who DJ’d and brought his turntables to school for an art party. I got my hands on those babies and was hooked! I couldn't afford to DJ so I put off djing and started to dance, which I don't regret. Then I started to date djblesOne, who is my DJ partner right now (Real Love DJs), and totally jocked him hard cuz I wanted to DJ. No, just kidding! After years of dating and having a band together – Don't Talk to the Cops! – I told him my childhood secret of wanting to DJ. I really had to prove myself so that I could DJ alongside him. He said it came so naturally to me but I definitely put in a lot of hard work to get where I am at. I have an incredible mentor and I always want to elevate myself.
How did you come up with the name Emecks?
Back in the day, we used to write notes in class to each other and pass em along during school periods. You know, the kind you fold up all fancy like origami and shit. Everyone had nicknames too, so you wouldn't put your real name on the note. People had like Babygurl Blu3, AnGeLcAkEs, Sw33t PinaY, etc. (Laughs.) I didn't want something corny and plus my cousin Darren wasn't corny either. So he wrote me a note one day during passing period and labeled it "Em Ecks", which is my initials M X phonetically spelled out, and voila! That stuck and became my name!
